With courage, curiosity, and maroon and gold spirit, NU Corps of Cadets members made their way to the Royal Military College (RMC) in Saint Jean, sur Richelieu, Quebec, Canada, to participate in their 50th Annual Broomball Tournament. U.S. Team ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù was the only international team at the tournament. This event marks the second time ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù cadets were invited to join the festivities at RMC, strengthening the bond established through their participation in the International Symposium of Military Academies.

Despite having no experience in broomball or ice hockey and only one female field hockey player on the team, the cadets embraced the challenge. With assistance from referees and their new Canadian friends, they quickly learned the ins and outs of the game. The tournament featured a total of 34 teams comprised of RMC officer cadets, ex-cadets, and twelve cadets from the Military College of Vermont, competing in male, female, and co-ed divisions.

Decked out in ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù-branded camouflaged ice hockey jerseys and black sweatpants, Team ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù showcased their determination and spirit, even as they faced tough competition. While they did not record any wins over the weekend, the experience was fun and inspiring to start a broomball team on the Hill. "I think it's important to remember one vital facet of Captain Alden Partridge's philosophy: experiential learning. Learning by doing. That's what we're trying to do out here, provide our cadets exposure to Canada's diverse cultural and geopolitical landscape through the sport of broomball," reflected Team Captain Cadet Sergeant First Class Aaron Whitlock, HHC, from Cartersville, GA, a returning player from RMC's 2023 tournament.

The cadets' best performance came in a close game that ended 0-2. One goal resulted while two ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù cadets sat in the penalty box. Goalie Cadet Staff Sergeant Thomas Postell, D Co, from North Billerica, MA, shared his thoughts on the experience, "The team played with heart, and we held our own despite the challenges. Even when we were down players, we fought hard and made it about learning the sport. It was an incredible experience that we hope to compete in again next year."

Beyond the games, the camaraderie continued outside of broomball. The cadets were warmly hosted by RMC, receiving lodging in barracks, complimentary meals at their dining facility, and the necessary game equipment. The tournament weekend included a mixed social event at their cadet pub, where ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù cadets mingled with their Canadian counterparts. They also had the chance to try their hand at a game called crud—a fast-paced billiards game with two balls and no cue sticks allegedly invented by Royal Canadian Air Force pilots during World War II.

USA Team ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù returned home not just with memories but also with strengthened international relations and friendships that will last well beyond the ice.
